22 Week Heavy Equipment Operator

Heavy equipment operators operate heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, airports, gas and oil pipelines, tunnels, buildings and other structures, in surface mining and quarrying activities and in material handling work.

This pre-employment apprenticeship program is accredited by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board (PACB) and is offered to individuals seeking a career as a heavy equipment operator. Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be qualified for an entry level heavy equipment operator position.

They will have the skills and knowledge to safely operate as an apprentice, and have the opportunity to progress to Journeyperson Certification. Graduates will obtain a Class 3 Driver’s license with the Air Brakes endorsement (09), and a Class 8 Traction Engine License. This program includes training on three pieces of equipment.

Note:

There are seven pieces of equipment under the Heavy Equipment Operator umbrella in NL. Three of these are designated as Red Seal trades, and four are designated as provincial only trades. See table below:
